15 Common Symptoms of pregnancy

What were some of your signs or symptoms of pregnancy? Mine were missing my normal period, feeling nauseas while brushing my teeth, sore nipples, constipation and vomiting. What were yours? Let me know in the comments.
1.Missing your regular monthly period

This is usually a first for many women including me. In fact, even before I miss my period my husband would get the first symptoms. How many of you out there had that experience? After our first he would suddenly feel sick and tell me I’d better go and get checked out because that is usually the first sign that I am pregnant. We missed it with the first pregnancy but we were on it after that. Every time I went to the doctor I was pregnant.
Now there are some women who I know who have never had a missed period and continued having periods during their pregnancy. I will explain why this happens in another post. And then there are some women who do not even know that they are pregnant because their periods are irregular.
2.Bleeding – Implantation
Bleeding should never be taken lightly during pregnancy. The majority of women will experience an implantation bleed when then the egg and sperm embed into the uterus after fertilization. I remember having a very short bleed before confirming my pregnancy.
However, do not take any bleeding lightly because it can also indicate a serious pregnancy complication like miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or placenta previa. If you are concerned, always consult your doctor.
3.Watch the pounds
I think every woman is concerned about her weight during pregnancy. Women should never be overweight during their pregnancy. Reason being that more weight can cause you to have a bigger baby -which can contribute to high blood pressure, and injuries at birth. It also puts you at risk for C-sections. During the first few months of pregnancy, you can expect to gain 1 to 4 pounds. Weight gain becomes more noticeable as you enter your second trimester.
Her is what is recommended according to CDC guidelines

4.High blood pressure in pregnancy- very common
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can occur during pregnancy. A variety of factors can raise your risk, including:
- Obesity or being overweight
- Having high blood pressure before you get pregnant
- Smoking
- Having a history of pregnancy-induced hypertension or having a family history of it.
- High blood pressure can be very dangerous during pregnancy. It can cause you to become blind, and also develop seizures. This condition is called eclampsia.
5.Heartburn

Pregnancy hormones can sometimes relax the valve between your stomach and esophagus. When stomach acid leaks, it can cause heartburn. Have you ever heard a pregnant woman say her baby is going to have a lot of hair because she is having a lot of heartburn? Well mama the truth is heartburn has nothing to do with your baby having any hair.
6.Constipation
Early pregnancy hormone changes can cause your digestive system to slow down. as a result of that you get hard stools. Boy this one was one of my biggest struggles. However the prune juice, warm lemon water, green tea and black current grapes worked wonders for me. Sometimes your iron tablets can actually make constipation worse. If you are experiencing any constipation let your care provider know. He might need to reduce your dosage or prescribe another type.
7. Abdominal Cramps
As the muscles in your uterus begin to stretch and expand, you may feel a pulling sensation that resembles menstrual cramps. If spotting or bleeding occurs alongside your cramps, it could signal a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. I experienced these cramps off and on during my labor. They feel like a severe period pain – more severe than the ones where you had to go home from school or work because it was almost unbearable. All moms do pretty well tolerating cramps during pregnancy.
8. Back pain

The main culprit for this is hormones and stress on the muscles. Your growing baby is putting pressure on body resulting in backache early during the pregnancy but can also return in the last trimester and during labor. Around half of all pregnant women report back pain during their pregnancy.
9. Anemia- low iron levels
With all of my pregnancies, I had a low iron level. 10 . 5 -11 grams the most. Having a good iron supply is needed for so many body functions. No matter how I tried, it always seemed like an uphill battle.
Did you know that having a poor iron level can put you at risk for infection , more tears vaginally and even Cesarean birth. I have nursed some women because they did not have the sustaining power to push their babies out they had to be rushed to the ER? You see during labor you need oxygen and blood volume to help you to push your baby out. So encourage to eat lots of iron rich foods as mentioned above.
I tried so hard to get my iron up to a high level
I would eat at lot of meat and veggies i.e. broccoli, beans, fish, chicken, Pregnant women have an increased risk of anemia, which causes symptoms such as lightheadedness and dizziness.
The condition can lead to premature birth and low birth weight. Prenatal care usually involves screening for anemia hence, regular attendance is crucial.
10. Depression

Did you know pregnancy is not a happy time for some women? Unfortunately, getting pregnant can lead to depression for some women. I have helped many women who were actually very sad because they got pregnant. I’ve met both married and single. The common denomination was that they all either had just had a baby a year ago or already had too much children and could not meet their basic needs.
Between 14 and 23 percent of all pregnant women develop depression during their pregnancy. The many biological and emotional changes you experience can be contributing causes. Be sure to tell your doctor if you don’t feel like your unusual self.
11. Insomnia- cannot sleep

All humans need sleep. Agree? I was the opposite. I love to sleep. Boy I remember when I was pregnant during the first trimester I just wanted to sleep. I was even surprised to see myself wanting to sleep so often. Insomnia is another common symptom of early pregnancy. It is important for pregnant mamas like you to manage the stress in your life. Stress, physical discomfort, and hormonal changes can be the reason. A balanced diet, good sleep habits, and prayer stretches can all help you get a good night’s sleep.
12. Breast changes
Breast changes are one of the first noticeable signs of pregnancy. Even before you’re far enough along for a positive test, your breasts may begin to feel tender, swollen, and generally heavy or full. Your nipples may also become larger and more sensitive, and the areolae may darken. My nipples became so sensitive, I knew something was different and it was.
13. Nausea and Vomiting

This is often called morning sickness. And this one was a nightmare for me! I mean I thought my time had come after so many bouts of this. I was actually for me the worst part of being pregnant. Globally, 75-80% of women experience common symptom that usually appears within the first four months. Morning sickness is often the first sign that you’re pregnant. Increased hormones during early pregnancy begin.
During this time your body is adjusting to the increased levels of hormones being introduced into your body. What I have found was when I developed the constant nausea and vomiting, I became fatigued. Never allow yourself to get this far. I eventually learned to stay satisfied with healthy snacks and drinks that you can tolerate helped me out tremendously.
14.Diarrhea- or loose stools
Diarrhea or loose stools and other digestive difficulties occur frequently during pregnancy. Hormone changes, a different diet, and added stress are all possible explanations. It is important that if you have a frequency of loose stools that last more than two days , you should seek medical help so that you do not become dehydrated.
15.Stress and pregnancy

Let me tell you mama, While pregnancy is usually a happy time, it can also be a source of stress. A new baby means big changes to your body, your family, and even your partner. Pregnancy can be overwhelming. Don’t hesitate to ask your family, doctor and friends for help if needed. I believe every pregnant mama should be fully supported and celebrated. Don’t you? 😊

12 Amazing Ways To Getting Started With Your Pregnancy: Planning for good success

By Marilyn Smith:RN, BSN, Midwifery Educator, CLC
Congratulations if you’ve just found out you’re pregnant! You must prioritize self-care now that you are pregnant in order to keep yourself and your baby as healthy as possible. If you’re a first-time mom-to-be or haven’t had a baby in a while, here’s a guide to what you should do in early pregnancy to keep you and your baby healthy
1. Do a home pregnancy test

Some persons prefer to do a home pregnancy test. That’s what I did with all my pregnancies. I bought the tests and every time they were accurate. There are several home tests you can do it yourself (DIY). Here are three you can try:
1.Try sugar

Many people consider the following to be one of the most accurate made at home pregnancy tests. A fun fact: before pregnancy tests were available in every corner store, sugar was a common solution. Here is what you will need:
- A tablespoon of sugar
- Two plastic cups
- A tablespoon of urine
Begin by collecting your urine in a cup once you have all of the supplies for your homemade pregnancy test. You’ll also need another cup with two tablespoons of sugar.
The best way to perform this DIY pregnancy test is to use the same sugar-to-urine ratio. The results will be most visible this way.
There will be a reaction after you add two tablespoons of urine to the sugar cup. There are two possibilities:
Sugar will completely dissolve.
Sugar crystallizes.
Examine the cup after a few minutes, when the reaction has calmed down. You’re expecting if you can see lumps.
- Sugar will dissolve completely.
- Sugar will form lumps or crystalize. Congratulations! you are pregnant if you see lumps.
2. Try toothpaste:

In this case, for making your own pregnancy test, you will need:
- Two plastic cups
- A stirring utensil
- White toothpaste
To begin, fill one cup with urine. The other is for toothpaste; make sure you’re using regular white toothpaste. Otherwise, there’s no way of knowing if the result is correct.
Now, add about 2 drops of urine to the cup that already has two tablespoons of toothpaste in it. Using a teaspoon or a stirring stick, combine these two ingredients.
You may notice color changes after a few moments. If your mixture turns blue, you’re expecting a child. However, if it remains white, you are not pregnant.
3. Vinegar ?

Yes you can even use vinegar mama. Here is what to do:
Collect –
A tablespoon of white vinegar-
Two plastic cups
A few drops of urine
A stirring utensil
Add up to four drops of urine to a cup with vinegar and stir the mixture properly. You may notice some bubbles but don’t pay attention to them — it’s not what we’re looking for in a result.
Beware, if the vinegar changes its color, there is the possibility you’re going to have a baby. Be on a lookout for any new color — any change is a sign of pregnancy.
I sure hope you use the test that resonates with you the most. Whether you decide to just purchase a pregnancy test or do a DIY lets go to step number two.
2. Consult your physician.

Visit your doctor or midwife as soon as you discover you are pregnant so that your pregnancy can be dated and your antenatal care can begin. Once you’ve informed your doctor that you’re expecting, they can schedule your routine pregnancy check-ups and appointments, which are scheduled throughout your pregnancy to ensure the health of both you and your baby.
During your pregnancy, your doctor can also advise you on diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices. During your initial visit to the doctor you will be guided into various questions concerning your pregnancy. It is here where you be given appointments for other important sessions. During this first visit you will be examined and have bloods drawn for lab testing to ensure that you are in great condition. A scan and or another pregnancy testing will be done. Choose a provider you trust with good outcomes and credibility. You can ask your friends and family for references.
3. Continue taking your folic acid
If you did go for preconceptual counseling you should continue to take your folic acid. Women are encouraged to begin taking folic acid 400mgs on a daily basis as soon as they begin trying for a baby, as folic acid helps protect unborn babies from serious birth defects such as spina bifida.
When your baby’s neural tube fails to close properly, birth defects can occur. Don’t worry if you hadn’t been taking folic acid before becoming pregnant; start taking a daily supplement until you’re twelve weeks pregnant. The first twelve weeks of your baby’s life are crucial for the development of his or her brain and nervous system, and this is when defects can occur. Folic acid is no longer required after 12 weeks. Choose a folic acid supplement with at least 400 micrograms of folic acid.
4. Ensure that your workplace is safe for you

Make certain that your workplace is safe.
Legally, pregnant women must notify their employers 15 weeks before their baby’s due date; however, if your job is hazardous, such as standing for long periods or doing heavy lifting, working excessive hours, being exposed to harmful substances, excessive noise, or heavy vibrations, you should notify your employer as soon as you discover you are pregnant.
Once you’ve informed your employer that you’re expecting, they must conduct a workplace risk assessment. Employers are not permitted to discriminate against you because of your pregnancy, and are required by law to provide you with time off for antenatal appointments without pay. Being a nurse I was able to work right up to my time before having my baby for maternity leave. Good bosses usually make accommodations for their pregnant employees.
5. Get in shape.
Keeping yourself healthy is essential for the health of your baby. Smoking can seriously harm your baby because smokers are more likely to have a baby with a low birth weight and increase the risk of cot death. Your doctor or midwife can advise you on how to stop smoking
6.Maintain your ideal weight with the right foods

Overweight pregnant women are more likely to have complications during birth and pregnancy. Obesity increases the risk of hypertension, pre-eclampsia, blood clots, gestational diabetes, premature birth, and birth defects. If your BMI is greater than 30, consult your doctor about how to lose weight. Eating the more natural versus the processed foods are important.
7.Exercise is great mood changer
While now is not the time to begin a strenuous exercise regimen if you aren’t already used to it, gentle exercise during pregnancy is a great way to stay healthy and keep your baby healthy as well. Walking, swimming, cycling, and antenatal care are all options. You will be amazed at the the way you think changes.
8.Alcohol
Because alcohol can seriously harm your baby, you should stop or reduce your drinking while pregnant. Although there is no conclusive evidence on how much alcohol you can consume before harming your baby, many pregnant women prefer not to drink at all. If you must drink, limit yourself to one or two units once or twice a week. Because the effects of alcohol is unknown it is recommended that none should be taken.

9.Drugs
Illegal drugs, such as cannabis, cocaine, and heroin, can be extremely harmful to the health of an unborn baby, causing placental abruption and withdrawal symptoms in babies if the mother used them regularly during pregnancy. However, if you used drugs as a one-time experiment before discovering you were pregnant, it is probable that you will not harm your
child.
10. Attend antenatal clinic regularly
Regular antenatal clinic is so important. It helps your medical team to assess your pregnancy progress. I want to encourage you to go as often as you can.
11. Make sure you do whatever your health care provider asks of you

This could be getting certain tests and taking certain medication done to ensure that you and your baby is doing fine and progressing along the way.
12. Decide when to share the good news!
It can be difficult to resist the urge to tell everyone you know (and even strangers) that you’re pregnant, but it’s best to keep your pregnancy news to yourself for the first 3 months. I waited for four months with all my four pregnancies. This is due to the increased risk of miscarriage during this time.
However, whether to tell people or keep it quiet is a very personal decision. Many parents want to share their excitement right away because they believe they will need the support of friends and family if anything goes wrong, but others prefer to keep things private until the all-important 12 week scan.

Frequently asked questions about pregnancy

Boy, I remember when even before I was pregnant I had many questions like you. Pregnancy no matter how many times you are pregnant there are many questions of concern. Congratulations! You’re pregnant and embarking on a fantastic journey. You’re bound to have a lot of questions, so our Maternity staff are here to help! To put your mind at ease, we’ve broken down a few of the most common questions they get from clients.
1.What medications are safe?
A: You must exercise extreme caution when taking medications while pregnant. You should not take any medications, including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements, without first consulting your doctor.
Here are some medicines that are recommended for common aches and pains, colds, and the flu:
- Take two regular-strength acetaminophen (ah-SEE-tah-min-oh-fen) tablets (325 mg), such as Tylenol, every six hours for headaches, muscle aches, or mild pain.
Saline nasal spray can help with congestion or a stuffy nose. Every six hours, squirt two squirts into each nostril. If you are more than three months pregnant, you may take one or two pseudoephedrine (sue-doe-eh-FEH-drin) (30 mg to 60 mg) tablets every six hours, such as Sudafed. Discuss the use of Sudafed during the first three months of pregnancy with your doctor. If your doctor tells you not to use it, try diphenhydramine instead. - like Benadryl. Take one to two Benadryl tablets (25 mg to 50 mg) every six hours. Use caution when taking Benadryl. It may make you drowsy.
- Gargle with warm salt water or mouthwash to relieve a sore throat. Cough drops or throat lozenges should be sucked.
Cough medicines containing dextromethorphan (dex-tro-meth-ORfan) and guaifenesin (gwy-FEN-ih-sin), such as Robitussin DM, can be used to treat a cough.
You can take Benadryl (25 mg to 50 mg) every six hours for seasonal allergies or hay fever, which may cause watery eyes and a runny nose. When taking Benadryl, proceed with caution.
2.Should I take the flu shot?
A: You should get vaccinated against the flu. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable to seasonal flu complications, which can result in miscarriage, premature labor, or other pregnancy complications. Getting vaccinated against the flu can protect both you and your baby.
For women who become pregnant during flu season, which typically lasts from early October to late March, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a flu shot. Because the flu shot is made from an inactivated virus, it is safe for both you and your baby. If you get a flu shot while pregnant, your baby will be protected until he or she is 6 months old. This is because you will produce antibodies that will cross the placenta and protect your baby.
3. Should I take my prenatal vitamins?
A: Prenatal multivitamins aid in the nutrition of your baby as well as the maintenance of your health during pregnancy. Minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc may be included in some prenatal multivitamins. Because some vitamins and minerals can harm an unborn baby if consumed in large quantities, you should take a prenatal vitamin designed for pregnant women. More information about prenatal multivitamins can be obtained from your pharmacist. If you breastfeed your child, you may need to continue taking prenatal multivitamins. Consult your doctor to see if this is a good idea for you.
4. Will morning sickness happen only in the mornings?
Can morning sickness occur at other times of the day?
A: Of course. Many women report that morning nausea and vomiting are the worst. These problems, however, can occur at any time of day or night. To find some relief, try the following suggestions:
Instead of three large meals, eat several small meals and healthy snacks throughout the day. You may feel nauseated if you eat too much or not enough.
Eat a small snack (such as crackers) before getting out of bed to help with morning sickness. Allow a few minutes for the snack to digest before slowly getting out of bed.
Consume plenty of fluids. Water, sports hydration drinks, broth, or juice (in moderation) are all acceptable beverages.
Consume more protein while limiting your intake of fatty foods.
Avoid foods and smells that make you feel sick.
If you take iron supplements, consult your doctor to see if they are necessary. If you vomit more than three times per day or are unable to keep fluids down, call your doctor right away, especially if you are also experiencing pain, fever, or both.
4. Can my hair dye while I’m pregnant
A: There hasn’t been a lot of research done on using products like hair dye, perms, or nail polish while pregnant. It is generally advisable to limit your exposure to these chemicals. If you choose to use them, do so in a well-ventilated room.
5. Is it okay to spot or bleed during pregnancy?
A: During pregnancy, you may experience red or brown spotting or light bleeding. During the first trimester, up to 25% of pregnant women experience spotting or light vaginal bleeding. Vaginal bleeding is more common in women who have previously been pregnant than in women who are pregnant for the first time. If the bleeding continues, you have cramps, or you see fluid or tissue in your underwear, contact your doctor immediately. This could be an indication of something more dangerous.
6. Can I exercise during pregnancy?
A: Reasonable exercise is beneficial for healthy pregnant women receiving prenatal care. It can help to improve your posture as well as relieve back pain and other pregnancy-related discomforts.
You can try swimming, water aerobics, pregnancy-specific exercise classes, or classes that provide safe variations for pregnant women. Before beginning an exercise program, consult with your doctor.
7. Is it okay to have sex during pregnancy?

- A: Your desire for sex may fluctuate throughout your pregnancy, but vaginal intercourse is safe as long as your pregnancy is uncomplicated. If any of the following occur, your doctor will most likely advise you to avoid sexual:
- The placenta covers or partially covers your cervix (placenta previa)
- Your “water” (amniotic sac) bursts (ruptured membranes)
- Contractions begin sooner than 37 weeks (preterm labor)
- You can always talk to your doctor about any concerns or questions you have.
8.How many ultra sounds will I need?
Ultrasound exams can be performed at any stage of pregnancy, but they are not always considered routine prenatal tests. Most OB-GYNs recommend that expectant mothers have at least two:
The first test is usually performed as part of a biophysical profile during your first trimester (a prenatal ultrasound evaluation).
The second is usually scheduled between 18 and 20 weeks, to look for signs of problems with the baby’s organs and body systems and confirm the fetus’s age and proper growth.
9. When can I find out the gender of my baby?
According to the Office on Women’s Health, you may be able to learn the gender of your baby during your second-trimester ultrasound appointment, which is usually between 18 and 20 weeks (OWH).
Conclusion
The last thing you need to know about pregnancy is the fact that you will always have questions about the topic especially as the times get closer to your birth. I want to encourage you to ask anyway if there are things that you do not understand. You have your health care workers, family and friends and of course you have me. I sure hope I was able to answer some of your concerns.
I want to encourage you to enjoy the moment because it will soon be gone. Take memorable pictures, keep a journal and you can even video tape some of your special moments during your pregnancy. It will value so much when your child reaches age 18 and beyond. As always I wish you every success. If you are a first time mom, fear not! Your mom, aunt, sister, and definitely me have done this before hence, you will do it too. Take one day at a time.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Feel free to ask or comment or ask a question about anything. Let me know what is your biggest concern for your pregnancy?
